CIC nanoGUNE has been awarded the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence for the third consecutive time
CIC nanoGUNE received its third María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence accreditation at an official ceremony in the Cubo Azul Auditorium of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, organised by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to recognise the research centres and units selected in the 2025 call. Representing nanoGUNE were its director José María Pitarke, and lead researcher Luis Hueso, who received the accreditation statuette that reaffirms the centre’s position as an international leader in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
This distinction is presented by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, through the State Research Agency (AEI). It forms part of the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Excellence Programme, the benchmark for scientific excellence in Spain, which recognises research centres and units that demonstrate outstanding scientific leadership, international impact and a solid strategic vision to push the boundaries of knowledge. As well as the recognition of scientific and institutional standing, the accreditation is accompanied by a grant of 2.25 million euros for four years, to promote strategic actions that strengthen research excellence, attract talent and boost internationalisation and knowledge transfer.
This third consecutive accreditation further emphasises nanoGUNE’s consistent scientific output, its ability to attract and train international talent, and its contribution to the research and innovation ecosystem, thus strengthening its role as a benchmark centre at the interface between fundamental science and the technologies of the future.
